
Tiziana Catarci is a full professor in Computer Science and Engineering at Sapienza University of Roma. She is also the director of the Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering “Antonio Ruberti”, and director of the ECONA Interuniversity Research Centre on the Cognitive Processing in Natural and Artificial Systems.
In 2014, she served as Sapienza vice-rector for technologies and infrastructures and as president of the Sapienza ICT service center. Between 2015 and 2018, she was the
director of the Sapienza Design Research center and president of KION, a private company in the Cineca group.
Tiziana Catarci’s main research interests are in theoretical and application-oriented aspects of visual formalisms for databases, human-computer interaction, user interfaces, usability, smart environments, information visualization, data management, data quality and digital libraries. She has published over 200 papers on these topics. She is also the author of 20 books. In particular, her contribution can be regarded as one of the first and most significant examples of deep analysis and formalization of the interaction between the user and the database, which takes in consideration both usability issues and various database related aspects.
Tiziana Catarci is the Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Journal of Data and Information Quality. She also serves as editor of several international journals and has been co-chair of many renowned international conferences in both database and hci areas. Dr. Catarci has been a founding member of the Italian Chapter of the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction.
She is also very active in working to combat gender disparities and promoting the STEM disciplines among female students by initiating dedicated projects at both high school and university level and acting as a role-model for “Inspiring Girls”) among other initiatives.
Tiziana has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and recognitions such as the IBM Eclipse Innovation Award, honor of “Commendatore” of the Italian Republic, nominated member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and being included in the “100 Women for Science” project in 2016. In 2017 she received the Levi Montalcini Association award for the "diffusion of scientific culture among younger generations". In 2018 she was included among the “InspiringFifty”, a recognition of the most influential women in the tech world. That same year, she was nominated as a fellow of the EAI – European Alliance for Innovation.
