AI4EU is the European Union’s landmark Artificial Intelligence project, which seeks to develop a European AI ecosystem, bringing together the knowledge, algorithms, tools and resources available and making it a compelling solution for users. Involving more than 70 partners, covering 21 countries, the €20m project kicked off in January 2019 and will run for three years.
AI4EU will unify Europe’s Artificial Intelligence community. It will facilitate collective work in AI research, innovation and business in Europe. By sharing AI expertise, knowledge and tools with the Platform, AI4EU will make AI available to all.
→ Mobilize the entire European AI community to make AI promises real for European Society and Economy
→ Create a leading collaborative AI European platform to nurture economic growth
To achieve these goals, the project includes a diverse set of tasks and an ambitious set of activities.
• Create Europe’s leading AI On-Demand-Platform that is open and sustainable
• Bring stakeholders together through high-profile conferences and virtual events
• Develop a relevant, comprehensive and stimulating Strategic Agenda for European AI
• Establish an Ethics Observatory to ensure development of human-centred AI
• Roll out of €3m in Cascade Funding
AI4EU will nurture more adequacy between business needs and research results and accelerate growth. It will help the European Community to become a global leader in both highly advanced and human-centred AI, promising cutting-edge breakthroughs in this pivotal technological arena.
Paris Event AI4EU launching event will take place in Paris at the European AI Night, on April 18th, from 2pm to 10pm.
This will be a key European event for corporates, researchers and policymakers. Our aim is to build bridges between global companies and endemic AI actors: research centers, startups, tech giants and AI enthusiasts. In the outstanding scenery of Palais de Tokyo, participants will accelerate AI projects and engage with the most influential AI experts in EUROPE.

AI4EU Bundles Europe’s Strengths in AI: On January 10th and 11th 2019 the AI4EU project got off to its official start in Barcelona. AI4EU, an acronym for “Artificial Intelligence for the European Union”, unites 79 partner organizations based in 21 countries.
The project aims at counterbalancing the fragmentation of AI knowledge and experience in Europe by building an AI-on-demand platform. The platform will be open to the European AI community comprising researchers, technology developers, experts in business and industry as well as educators and the general public. For these, the platform offers access to curated data suitable for testing and developing AI applications, certified AI tools and algorithms as well as computing power.
The AI4EU project receives a total funding of €20 million from the European Commission over the next 3 years. As part of the Horizon 2020 program, AI4EU forms a key element in the EU strategy on Artificial Intelligence, aiming at increasing public and private investment in AI technologies, facilitating access to data and tools as well as educating and training future experts and employees from all business sectors, especially small and medium-sized enterprises in Europe. Furthermore, an ‘Ethics Observatory AI4EU’ will be established in order to engage AI experts and the European public in discussions about ethical, legal and social implications of the technology.
The research conducted under the AI4EU umbrella focusses on human-centered AI. The researchers will collaborate to identify and bridge knowledge gaps, provide collaborative AI tools and develop applications, which are explainable, verifiable and integrative. Moreover, the connection of the research and development activities to applications in the physical world, e.g. in industrial production, plays a major role. For this reason, the research will relate to eight pilot applications, e.g. in the fields of education, robotics, healthcare, media, agriculture, Internet of Things and cybersecurity.
During the kick-off meeting, the project members had the chance to meet in person their European counterparts and discuss strategies for building up the platform for an AI community. The technical implementation of the platform plays of course a central role. In addition to the technical challenges, communication, public outreach and the organization of upcoming public events throughout Europe were other major topics for the meeting.
AI4EU will reinforce European excellence and a worldwide leading position in key AI research and application domains. Human values and ethics will serve as guidelines for all research and development. Thus, the project is setting the roadmap for AI research, technological innovation and ethical governance for the next decades in Europe.
Currently 79 members are building this exciting new platform.
