Meet This Week’s WAIROE, MAGDALENA KORTAS

Magdalena Kortas completed her bachelor's degree in International Managerial Economics and obtained a Master of Science in Economic Analytics at Gdansk University of Technology, one of the best technical universities in Poland. While pursuing these degrees, she took courses in math, statistics, data mining, data analysis and IT. 

After graduation from university she continued education on a 6-month long intensive Data Science Bootcamp and took various online courses on Udemy, Coursera, edX and Datacamp. Magdalena was a scholarship recipient of O'Reilly Strata Data Conference and Women in Analytics Conference.

She has been working in Data Science for almost three years, firstly as a Data Scientist in fraud detection optimization in a big Nordic bank, later as a Data Scientist in a corporate travel industry. Apart from that she has been volunteering as a machine learning engineer in AI for Good projects in Omdena and as a technical writer on Medium. 

In 2018 Magdalena became one of the co-founders of the local chapter of Women in Machine Learning and Data Science (WiMLDS). As a co-founder, during the last two years, she has helped in the organization of various data science workshops, network meetings and projects. 

In 2019 she co-organized, as a part of WiMLDS organization, an educational machine learning project called "Sound-Based Bird Classification". The goal of the project was to use deep learning, acoustics and ornithology to classify birds. Read more here. 

In October 2020 she started another non-profit project called "Waste Detection in Pomerania" about detecting waste in the environment.(www.detectwaste.ml)
